Professional Development Plan

Subject Matter: During my Professional Internship I intend to align the new Common Core Standards with the SPECTRUM model, outlined by Kean University, for my three middle school science classes. Not only will this improve my command of the material, but it will also ensure maximum comprehension of the material for my students.

Student Learning: I am a proponent of collaborative learning. Studies have shown that students do not learn well when they are isolated receivers of knowledge. Science is a great subject to have students work together. They work in groups to complete labs, projects, and group discussions.

Diversity of Learners:During my professional internship I also need to be aware of the diversity of my learners. I plan to accommodate my students learning needs based on their learning styles, IEP's, and cultural differences.

Classroom Management: I believe that classroom management is one of the most important plans a teacher can have. The classroom needs to have organization. Materials for certain lessons need to be put away in a place where they won't be disturbed until you need them. Lesson plans need to be organized with a clear focus, and set of directions planned ahead of time. Maintaining discipline is one of the most difficult areas of classroom management, especially when working with older students. Clear and reasonable ground rules need to be set on day one of your school year. Remember to handle all discipline actions with the utmost respect and fairness.

Assessment: I plan to assess my students through formal and informal assessment strategies. While students are completing work I intend to walk around and assess their understanding of the task at hand. If understanding is not there I would stop the class and re-focus their goal. I will also use formal assessment through tests, quizzes, labs, and group projects.

Technology/Critical Thinking: I plan to utilize technology in my lessons through smart boards, computer stations, and DVD and VHS movies. This technology will help to enhance students thinking and learning to a more advanced level.

Communication: Through the years I have learned that communication is everything. I plan to keep an open line of communication between myself and my students, their parents, and colleagues. I believe that a lack of communication anywhere along those lines will drastically effect the outcome of a students learning. I plan to attend back to school night to introduce myself to the parents so they will feel comfortable communicating with me with regards to their children.
